BICYCLE RACK - ‘THE KNOT’
The design of the bike rack is an abstraction of a multi-purpose marine knot - the clove hitch. The basis of the concept derives from different techniques and knowledge required in the practice of sailing and fishing, from tying a boat to a dock to fixing a sea-sponge fishing net. The bicycle rack celebrates the clove hitch knot as a technique and representation of an ancient practice tied to the seafaring and marine historical and present-day context of the Town of Tarpon Springs, while simultaneously serving as a sculptural docking mechanism for bicycles.
Using two-inch diameter piping, the proposed bicycle rack consists of a double circular shape that allows for two bicycles to be stationed on either side, functioning as any other U-shaped bicycle rack in the market. The outer loops of the bicycle rack are lifted one foot from the ground to allow for comfortable securing of the bicycle, specifically providing room for the rider’s feet at ground level. Because of its circular nature, the bicycles can be locked at any point in the loop, allowing for various sizes of bicycles to be accommodated.
